Yagil Eliraz, originally from Israel, has almost two decades of experience as a stage director and educator. Productions he directed vary from classical plays such as The Oresteia, Oedipus, Coriolanus, and Peer Gynt, to new work focused on contemporary issues; from Monodramas to opera, from stylized movement-based performances to hyper realistic German drama. In recent years he is especially invested in Greek tragedy and in exploring the relationship of text—movement—music in his works.
Along with his freelance directing, Yagil has also served as the Artistic Director and Chief Producer of two prestigious annual festivals in Israel: SmallBama Festival of Tel Aviv University and the Israel Festival’s Arena.
In his teaching capacity, Yagil is a former Assistant Professor at Amherst College, MA, USA. Additionally, he has taught in various educational levels, such as: community learning, middle school, high school, college, master programs and professional development.
Yagil won the Morasha Foundation’s grant for outstanding artists (2008), and represented Israel in the Prague Quadrennial with his opera adaptation of Oedipus (2011). He is honored to have been awarded the Yale University President’s Public Service Fellowship in 2014.
Yagil has an M.F.A in Theater Directing from the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University (2016). He holds a B.A degree (Magna) in Theater Directing from the Faculty of the Arts at Tel-Aviv University (2010).
